Water giants are dumping sewage, so why can’t we? When the urge takes you, just head for the river

A hosepipe ban has just been extended in one of the very wettest parts of England, after the wettest March for 40 years and an even wetter January. I have the suspicion that if South West Water were in charge of Mawsynram in the East Khasi Hills district of India — reputedly the wettest place on God’s earth, with an average of 467 inches of rain a year — there would be notices all over the place telling you not to fill up your hot tub and to let the crocuses wither.
